Scald hail from Northern Ireland and let’s just say that after reading their band biography it’s a miracle that these two releases exist. Scald has had more than their share of problems, label issues, etc., but they weathered the storm long enough to release these two disks. These two CDs are testament to a vision that is completely outside of any predefined or conceived idea regarding extreme music. Scald’s sound contains bits of metal, crusty punk and noise respectively. They throw all of this together and come out with a mid-paced to dirge-like sound that is heavy in both the positive and the negative. What I mean by that is that a slight (negative) pause or open space creates as much tension as the distorted (positive) crunch or noise-filled space. Disk one reminds me of a more stark Neurosis. Disk two, is quite the opposite as it features more speed and a more frenzied approach. Of course, Scald monkeywrenches that idea by slowing everything down to a crawl only to settle back into a whipping groove before ratcheting up the speed anew. These discs kick ass. The vocals, on both discs, are raspy and are mocked by distant-sounding screeching and death metal roaring which comes off sounding fucking eerie. According to their website they are working on a new album titled ‘Headworm’ that is the heaviest thing they’ve ever done. I for one cannot wait to see what they come up with.

This is weird stuff - I'll say that much. Scald is one of the few metal bands from Ireland that I've gotten the chance to hear and unfortunately I'm not too into their music. However, that doesn't mean they suck. In fact, I would say their material is ahead of its time.
All three discs have a slight grindcore edge, but also seem to feature some odd progressive song structures and definitely off-kilter lyricisms. Vocally, Pete Dempsey keeps the listener on his or her toes with a double-tracked attack of higher register screeches (similar to old Napalm Death) and low- to mid-rage growling.
On the musical side, this stuff is strange and much of the time (particularly the two Nematoid CDs), meandering, clearly standing out amongst the sea of normal metal bands. The Born with Teeth CD, which I prefer of the three, seems to keep to more traditional structures and chugging guitar. Scald is definitely something for all the open-minded to look into and more standard death metal fans should check out Born with Teeth.

Scald have been around for a few years now, playing their own brand of technical metal, and this is their third self released outing. Musically, they tend to sound like a hybrid of HC and black metal genres, with an emphasis on intricate structures instead of conventional songs. Although I thought earlier recordings were good, they seemed clinical and devoid of emotion…this however is a definite progression. If anything, the songs are more technical yet seem pacier and more aggressive than before. These are contrasted well with the atmospheric guitar breaks, extreme vocals and a liberal use of samples now typical of the latest underground metal. Despite this being a self release, this is equal to, and in places exceeds, the quality of bands that would be considered their contemporaries. Great artwork / packaging polishes it off nicely!

A great surprise coming from this band! Scald dig their personal way into the grind scene with an innovative yet interesting trademark. First of all they refuse to play the usual full speed stuff, adding to their compositions a sort of atmospheric and slowed-down attitude: of course, a deviated sick way to slow down songs, something adding an obscure mood to the final result. Next to an experimental approach to the extreme scene, reminding to me on the same time Voi-vod, Carcass and Godflesh, Scald know how to hit your nerves and deserves surely more than a fast listening to be completely understood. A slow-food music for sleepless nights in the dark of your home (home sweet home?). Like the Nematoid worm they will invade your mind and let your fears see the light… Add that the songs are not so similar but rather differentiated (even without losing the Scald trademark) and you will have the complete picture: Scald are on the intelligent side of the extreme music! To me a real surprise to follow in their new evolutions.

SCALD - NEMATOID SPECIMEN PARTS V-IIX
This is the latest three track recording from one of N.Irelands premiere HEAVY metal bands (and I emphasise HEAVY!). Noise is what this recording is all about yet it does this in a very unique way. The brutal guitar, drums and vocals all can be reminiscent of the best grindcore acts. Yet the slow sluggishness of the guitars and drums at times contrasts sharply and is more in the vain of early black metal masters Darkthrone on their "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" masterpiece.
A difficult one to pigeonhole is this. It manages to use elements found in grind, death and black metal (primarily grind) yet mould them to form their own sound somewhere in between. The vocals are not the usual overdone low end vocals we expect to find in a grind release, no they are more on the mid to high end and serve to make this release more interesting. I have heard people call this "sludge grind" which is accurate enough but it leaves out far too much of what the band have managed to accomplish on this release.
I would recommend this to fans of all forms of extreme metal as it fuses so many together. People who think grindcore too pointless but death too weak will be in heaven with this! A definite sign of potential here and one to watch in the future... [8] Niall Kennedy

Comprising three clean-cut gentlemen that any young girly would be proud to take home to meet the parents, Northern Ireland's Scald are a pain in the arse to try to describe in a few sentences. Mercifully, their preferred description, 'weirdextremetallicoffbeatheadmelt', does the job rather admirably! It ain't just Death Metal or Grindcore… As for Black Metal? Fuck off... these chaps have picked up more misleading tags in their life than any other band I know of! In terms of musical experimentation and exploration, Scald arguably lead the Irish pack and are perhaps doomed to remain underground because of it... for this demo is no collection of foot-stomping boogies or non-demanding generic rehashes of your favourite genres - it needs to be listened to with your fullest concentration. However, this isn't to say that it's an arduous task... it's surprisingly accessible in its own uniquely complex way. Suffice to say, if the mere mention of the likes of Voivod, Godflesh and Carcass gets you squirming with ecstasy upon your throne of stone, then this will pleasure you mightily. I should point out that this demo is best listened to through earphones, for it's there that the production gels best and you get to hear the fullest depths of the songs. Pete's vocals do tend to get buried by the higher-pitched deliveries, which can become frustrating after a while... for the boy truly has a good throat on him (check out 'Birthweight'... nice!). Scald 'Nematoid Specimen Parts 1-1V' and 'Nematold Specimen Parts V-IIX'
Fed up with waiting around for Belgium's 'Shiver Records' to get their arse in gear after a year's run- around, Scald have returned to their own nefarious devices and these be the result. This Belfast three- piece has always been averse to being pigeonholed,
preferring the tag 'weirdextrernetailicoffbeatheadrnelt'Metal, but essentially it's a strong and HIGHLY INDIVIDUAL blend of grind and death that coalesces into a supremely powerful whole. OK, let's unleash the first of these two demos. Lyrically, Scald continue to explore the more unsavoury aspects of the human psyche (but no'rancid fuckholes' this time around), and the music seems to have more room to move this outing, if that makes sense. Closer ditty, 'The Meat Perfect', sees an even darker side to Scald than they have ever exposed before, and to these ears is by far the best cut off this platter, with Pete using a broader range of vocal styles than on others. Indeed, it's one of the most striking songs Scald have written to date. Oh aye, nice sample at the end, chaps. The second demo (where they seem to have screwed up their Latin numerics) also sees progression from the 'Born With Teeth'-era aural goodies, though somewhat strangely this demo would seem more like a predecessor to ' Parts I-IV'. Again, a mix of shade and colour, leading to a sound that transcends conventional boundaries, or at least meets them in dodgy circumstances and violates'em in a most deviant manner. 'The Longest Day' is the sweetest abuse on offer here. Eyebrow-raising stuff indeed, a soundtrack for yer worst nitemares.

The first CD (Parts I-IV) was promising if a little off the wall sounding. This opus continues in the same vein, however, Scald have fine tuned remarkably and the end product is weird yet wonderful. It’s hard to liken this band to anybody else, as they really break all boundaries and provide some truly original music. The clear production really brings out the best of the churning guitars and eerie rasping vocals. Insane death metal at its best. Enjoy!

Von SCALD hat hierzulande mit Sicherheit so ziemlich niemand was gehört. Ich persönlich wurde auf dieses, auf CD gebannte, Demo der Iren auch nur durch das sehr gelungene Cover-Artwork aufmerksam (übrigens gezeichnet vom Schlagzeuger der Band, dessen Bilder von einem sehr wirren und kranken Stil geprägt sind... tendiert ungefähr in Richtung H.R. Giger).Als ich mir das Teil dann zu Gemüte führte, wurde mir klar dass man eine Platte manchmal sehr wohl nach dem Cover beurteilen kann!
Die drei Songs bliesen mich dann auch dementsprechend weg! Der Opener "The Longest Day" ist einfach der totale Hass! Diese wild hereingekreischten Vocals, das powergeladene Drumming und das groovige Riffing dürften keinen Nacken still lassen! Die beiden übrigen Songs "Birthweight" und "Vanishing Point / Nematoid" kommen zwar nicht ganz so wuchtig daher wie der Erste, stehen diesem jedoch qualitativ in nichts nach und sind sogar noch grooviger!
Auch zeigen SCALD dass man ohne High-Speed-Drumming und ohne tiefste Schusterbassvocals Aggression zur Höchststufe bringen kann. Im allgemeinen ist die Musik der Iren sehr einfalls- und vor allem abwechslungsreich, wie es zum Beispiel die sämtlichen Geschwindigkeitswechsel und, in diesem Sinne, vor allem das sehr abwechslungsreiche Drumming unterstreichen. Ein weiterer Pluspunkt ist die Tatsache, dass SCALD so eigenständig klingen dass sie sich kaum mit anderen Bands vergleichen lassen. Höchstens die alten CARCASS könnten da herhalten, doch selbst dieser Vergleich haut nicht ganz hin.
Neben der musikalischen Qualität lässt auch die Produktion keine Wünsche offen. Somit ist jedes Instrument deutlich zu hören, wobei es den Songs vor allem an Wucht in keinster Weise fehlt. Für ein Demo wahrlich lobenswert!
Ansonsten ist noch zu erwähnen dass die Iren ihre Texte, in Form eines schlichten bedruckten Zettels, beigefügt haben. Diese sind im übrigens - genauso wie die Musik selbst - kompromisslos, krank und einfach nur cool! Im Großen und Ganzen ist "Nematoid: Specimen Parts V-IIX" ein für Demoverhältnisse absoluter Treffer ins Schwarze!

I’m quite sure nobody here ever heard of SCALD before. To be honest my first interest was only caught by the great cover artwork – a very weird and eerie, H.R.Giger-like picture, which was painted by the band’s drummer. Then when I listened to the demo, the songs completely blew me away! The opener “The Longest Day” is pure hatred brought to life with wild, screamy vocals, powerful drumming and groovy riffs – a real stunner. The two other Songs “Birthweight” and “Vanishing Point / Nematoid” are, though groovier and of the same quality, not as brutal as the first track, but still above average.
SCALD are proving that pure aggression and power can be achieved without high-speed-drumming and death metal type growling. All in all the songs are very inventive, especially the diversified drumming must be mentioned. Another advantage is that SCALD can’t be compared with any other band – except probably with Carcass, but even this relation isn’t really working – make up your own mind!
The sound of the demo is upper class and leaves no more questions. The lyrics perfectly fit the music of those Irish guys – uncompromisingly, unsound and just cool.In the end "Nematoid: Specimen Parts V-IIX" is a hit in the mark.

Merkwürdig erschienen mir SCALD ja schon auf ihrem ´97 Album "Born With Teeth". Und auf dem nun vorliegendem zwanzigminütigem Werk "Nematoid : Specimen Parts V - IIX" geht das Spiel munter weiter. Wiederum stechen die kranken Vocals hervor, die dieses mal fast durchgängig als Screams auf das europäische Festland geflattert kommen. Das gibt dem Album ein schwarzmetallischeres Erscheinen als seinem Vorgänger. Aber man muss ganz klar sagen typischer Black Metal klingt anders. Dazu sind die Gitarren bei SCALD viel zu schwer (fast schon doomig), der Bass knarrt zu verzerrt und das Schlagzeug verrichtet sind Hauptaufgaben auch im mittleren Tempobereich. "Nematoid : Specimen Parts V-IIX" ist im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger weitaus strukturierter. Die einzelnen Instrumente gehen öfter als bisher symbiotisch miteinander um. Nichtsdestotrotz können mich SCALD auch mit diesem Werk nicht aus den Socken hauen, da der Gesang über weite Strecken immer noch nervt und der Sound auch diesmal viel zu dünn ausgefallen ist. SCALD already seemed odd to me when I first listened to their '97 album Born With Teeth, and ond their new release Nematoid: Specimen Parts V-IIX the band improved their strange style. I still don't like the sick vocals - mostly screams this time, which give the songs a more Black Metal-like outfit this time, but the songs on the album appear much more structured as on the last album and the instruments create an interesting symbiosis. But again SCALD don't manage to convince me, because the vocals are still bad, and the sound of the album is still too thin. Though the music is better and much more elaborated than on Born With Teeth it seems that SCALD don't know what to say or what to achieve with their music. Scald "Nematoid: Specimen Parts V-IIX": Esta es otra sorpresa venida de Irlanda llena de enfermedad y rapidez, típico en el buen Grindcore; Scald en este trabajo nos presenta solamente tres temas lamentablemente; al escuchar este Cd desde un principio me hizo recordar al antiguo Carcass, con esas introducciones habladas con las que caracterizó a su álbum "Necroticism", así es, a Scald le encuentro una fuerte influencia de bandas como el antes mencionado Carcass y demás bandas d esa vertiente; a veces uno se pregunta cómo es posible que tan sólo tres personas en este caso hagan una bulla tan hermosa por así decirlo, jejeje; pero así es. Los temas que conforman "Nematoid..." son: " The longest Day", "Birthweight" y "Vanishing Point"; el sonido de este demo CD es algo sucio, aunque creo que en cierta parte es adecuado para el estilo, al decir que es sucio no me estoy refiriendo a que sea inaudible. Este Cd ha sido auto producido por la gente de Scald; la presentación es más que buena, y lo que más me gusta es el artwork del cover, bastante enfermo, acorde con la música que profesa esta banda.

This is another surprise come from full Ireland of disease and rapidity, typical in the good Grindcore; Scald in this work presents/displays only three subjects lamentably to us; when listening this CD from a principle made me remember the old Carcass, with those spoken introductions with which it characterized to his album "Necroticism", thus is, to Scald him encounter a strong influence of bands like before mentioned Carcass and other bands that slope; sometimes one is wondered how it is possible that only three people in this case make a racket so beautiful so to speak, jejeje; but thus it is. The subjects that conform "Nematoid..." are: "The longest Day", "Birthweight" and "Vanishing Point"; the sound of this demo CD is something dirty, although I believe that in certain part it is adapted for the style, when saying that he is dirty I am not talking about to that he is inaudible. This CD has been car produced by the people of Scald; the presentation is than good more, and what I like more is artwork of cover, enough patient, agreed with the music that professes this band.

Delving into the realm of mind-numbing sludge which only those such
as Eyehategod usually brave, Scald have blended this dirty, lurching
breed of extremity with some of the percussive, striking aspects of
death metal and even touches of the extremity of the noisecore
fraternity here belching forth four tracks which are planned to make
up half of a theoretically upcoming full-length album. Judging by the
relatively well-produced and nicely constructed material featured
here I think the band deserve a contract, even if it be with a small
label, to give _Nematoid_ a full album crack. I for one would
definitely be interested in hearing the results.

Lets start of by me saying how much I simply underrated SCALD last time. I gave them 8 out of 10 which really doesn't convey the genius that went into that demo. This, their first NEMATOID however is much better than its sequel with much more originality, depth and variety contained within.
The music is as mentioned in my review of the second NEMATOID, the same blend of sludgy grind, death and the occasional black metal simplicity hiding the true complex nature of the evolving beast. With this first demo however there is a strong sense of DOOM contained within, possibly due to the even slower tempo on this recording. This doomy style is more violent, sick and unfriendly than any doom style heard before. Unlike the depression and depravity contained within the majority of the doom metal genre the main feeling conceived, expressed and felt within is of pure hatred, an aggressive anger to an unknown enemy. Due to the death, grind and black influences this works to great effect creating a very interesting concept. A captivating, emotional, beautiful yet harsh, cold and ugly interlinking with unquestionable moments of vast musical aptitude and mastery.
The vocals have really had an effect on me, more so than when writing the previous review due to the period of developing I've had with them. The higher pitched vocals as opposed to the typical monotone low end growls you would expect to find with such slow and sludgy music work to immense effect as they provide a very haunting ambience and a contrasting vibrant overlay to the heavy lethargic noise.
All instruments are executed to perfection and the top class production capture the sound perfectly. Scald also manage to fuse some softer sections into the songs, most notably as a perfectly fitting antithesis to the sludge doom/grind in "Recess". The guitar work relies heavily on "chugging" styled riffing and has a very dreary, dampened, lazy air to it sharply contrasting with the sections of brutality. The drum work is nice and rhythmic with an air of lethargy coexisting perfectly with the rest of the music, no frills but adequately performed rhythms."The Meat Perfect" is possibly my personal pick of the tracks but all are of breathtaking quality. In this track we perceive every aspect of Scald's unique sound and being almost 8 minutes this is their most epic composition which intensely impresses to the highest degree the genius of the Scald sound.

BITING BULLETS ZINE
SCALD – Nematoid specimen parts I-IV– This band are dark, so very dark. They deal in an outrageous brand of technical Death Metal that carries a slight industrial tinge to its construction. To say it’s different would be an understatement, but there is certainly enough here to keep most fans of the more extreme forms of modern day Metal happy and contented. Kicking off with the stop start lurch of ‘Lower I’ the band set their stall out well, brutalising and confusing the listener, but still holding your attention till the end. They continue this theme on all four tracks featured here, and what’s more the new stuff they are working on is also of the highest order as well.

No, these are not Russian gods of dark doom metal reincarnated. THIS SCALD comes with… Ireland. Wow! Actually, I thought (and it seems like it was yet another form of prejudice) it would be in the same vein as CRUACHAN and stuff like that, however, despite all my expectations, SCALD delivers no less unique form of a cross between furious black and death metal, a bit similar to SACRAMENTARY ABOLISHMENT at times (due to their grindcore roots, I believe?). Both MCDs consist of a couple of songs only (4 and 3 compositions in particular), however I wouldn’t say these are short ones. 20 minutes and more, you see (I’m talking about the albums’ overall length, of course). Well, what else… Both “Nematoids” come with a STUNNING artwork – I guess, it will be no wonder to me when someone informs me of an artistic exhibition held by Paul (who appears as the band’s drummer and artist in the same time). Drawbacks? Well, try to discover at least one of ‘em… You’re a lucky man, if you’ll succeed. Truly a band to be noticed. (review by Herr Stalhammar)

(Self released, 23'34', 4 tracks,( black-metal) : Scald is born in 1991 and released many stuffs for underground labels such Discrete Records or Shiver Records and they began relationships with Head Not Found but didn't signed with the Norwegian label. Maybe you know one of the member Paulrus 'cause he worked with the Norwegian Adorior about artwork. Finally in 1999, the band from Ireland took the things in its own hands and proposes some releases like this CD single, first part of a concept. The musical way of this first part is really original, a kind of black-metal with some grind touches but it is very difficult to give you some influences, maybe Burzum sometimes but Scald hasits own originality. Good CD single to discover the Scald music and word. (7/10)

Demo CDs seem to me to be getting more popular. I suppose with CD burners anyone with half a brain and an ounce of musical talent can knock one out. Its kinda sad as a lot of bands saw the debut CD as a challenge to work to, getting tapes out and the like, getting a name then releasing it. But fuck it, CDs are now becoming as easy as tapes to copy and use so, might as well keep up with the times! Right, what we have here is some nice and heavy experimental metal, kind of like a cross between Neurosis, Bloodlet, Eyehategod and I can pick out elements of Canvas and Today is the Day too. Its all rather cool and intense stuff. The four tracks on here last nearly 24 minutes and are all quite sparse at times, very obscure acoustic sections lead into Bloodlet style groove/ evilcore stylings. The vocals are either low death grunts, mid range Immortal style harsh screeches or high pitched Kevin Sharp screams. Overall this is one mighty demo and a very worthwhile listen. Get this if you’re into Neurosis, Bloodlet, Eyehategod etc. Recommended listening, especially the 8 minute closer, ‘The Meat Perfect’.

SCALD “The Meat Perfect” – Weird, hypnotic, slow and primitive stuff. Kind of death/doom metal or something like that. Anyway, worth to check out, if you like weird and unique stuff. 6/10
